Texas Senate Bill 13 Summary

New legislation from the 89th Texas Legislative Session has introduced new rules for Texas public schools to increase parental oversight and transparency regarding school library materials under SB13.

Key Changes That Affect Parents

Under Senate Bill 13, parents now have increased rights related to their child’s access to school library materials. Schools must allow parents to:

  • View the school’s online library catalog
  • Submit a list of books they don’t want their child to check out or access outside the library (using an online or paper form)
  • Receive a record of any library materials their child accesses outside the library (including the title, author, genre, and return date), through our Follett Destiny.

These changes are designed to give parents more visibility and control over what their children are reading outside the classroom.
